COLD ROOM

Choosing insulation for a commercial cold room

Insulation is central to room construction. The original guide looks at materials and the relationship between panel choice and thermal performance.

Choosing insulation for a commercial cold room

Understand the panel options

PIR and PUR are insulation materials used in cold storage panels. Thermal performance, fire performance and panel thickness all influence the specification; these properties should be assessed together.

Match insulation to the application

Freezing and chilling impose different demands on the room’s thermal envelope. Higher thermal resistance reduces heat transfer, but a suitable design also depends on the surrounding conditions and the required internal temperature.

Installation matters

Panels, joints and doors must work as a complete envelope. Effective insulation limits incoming heat, helping refrigeration equipment maintain a stable environment without unnecessary compressor work. Ask for advice on the complete room construction rather than comparing panel thickness alone.
